Planning for Culture and Sport in London

1st October 2009, 9am – 3pm

London’s Living Room
City Hall
The Queen’s Walk
SE1 2AA

This landmark event was designed for local and regional planners and senior policy makers in regeneration, culture, sports and tourism.

The event was the first in a series of regional seminars to explore exemplary approaches to incorporating culture and sports provision in local and regional spatial planning frameworks, and to introduce the unique Culture and Sport Planning Toolkit, which has been developed by the living places partnership.

This event has been designed to help officers with lead responsibility for planning and policy development in culture, sport and regeneration to:

  • play an increasingly important role in embedding culture and sports provision into local and regional strategic plans
  • improve their understanding of new developments such as standard charging for museums, libraries, sports and the arts
  • prioritise culture and sports provision so it meets the needs of local people and makes best use of existing facilities

Delegates to the London event had the chance to hear first hand from Munira Mirza – Mayoral Advisor on Arts and Culture - about the context of the emerging new London Plan and Mayor’s Cultural Strategy, and from Sir Peter Hall, President of the Town and Country Planning Association, about his vision for and experience of culture and sports planning.

The event presented examples of in-depth case studies highlighting successful culture and sports planning in a variety of London local authorities. Speakers included Rosemarie MacQueen, Strategic Director for Planning and Built Environment at Westminster Council, Jeremy Grint, Head of Regeneration and Economic Development at Barking and Dagenham Council and Simon Bevan, Head of Planning and Transport at Southwark Council.

There were hands-on workshops to explore practical applications of the Culture and Sport Planning Toolkit, followed by site visits to key cultural facilities and locations in Southwark to see examples of effective culture and sports planning outcomes and hear directly from those involved.

More about the toolkit

The living places Culture and Sport Planning Toolkit (CSPT) is an essential source of information and advice for all practitioners involved in culture and planning. It provides practical guidance to incorporating planning for culture and sport into new and existing developments in a way that provides maximum benefit for residents and visitors. You can find it online at www.living-places.org.uk.

The toolkit has been carefully designed to:

  • Help planning and culture professionals find information on how to integrate planning for culture and sport into their existing infrastructure
  • Develop a greater consistency in how planning authorities assess the need for culture and sport and build this into their plans
  • Build and share a body of knowledge about the best approaches to planning for cultural and sporting infrastructure

Shaping Places in London through Culture

Shaping Places in London through Culture will introduce you to a number of case studies that demonstrate excellent practice in many parts of the London Thames Gateway and elsewhere across the capital. These include examples of the ways in which heritage, creative industries, cultural and sporting activities have been integral to shaping the future of places across London through regeneration.

We look forward very much to seeing you in London on 1st October.
