Located in the heart of Coventry, the Herbert Museum and Art Gallery is an award- winning, modern, multipurpose building offering a wealth of cultural and learning opportunities for all ages. Named after renowned local industrialist, Sir Alfred Herbert, the Museum and Art Gallery has recently undergone a £20 million redevelopment project and is now considered a cultural hub of excellence serving both the local and regional communities.
The project was delivered in partnership but was principally delivered by Coventry City Council and Renaissance West Midlands (Museums, Libraries and Archives).
The Herbert Museum was primarily redeveloped to create a modern centre of excellence for knowledge, history and culture – and to provide a diverse range of opportunities for learning for both the local and regional communities. The high quality redevelopment combined with the rich diversity of the museum collections, has seen the museum raise the aspiration of local people, attracting world class exhibitions and creating numerous opportunities for learning and local employment.
Originally built in 1960, the museum needed to be updated to bring it into the 21st century and ensure it was fit for purpose. It needed to accommodate the flourishing cultural services and facilities which the Museum offers including a dedicated education space for local schools and colleges, a state-of–the-art media centre and exhibition spaces documenting all aspects of local history, the visual arts and more.
The project was also designed to make Coventry a more desirable destination and has succeeded- attracting visitors from all over the country and beyond.
In essence, the underlying principle was to create a multi purpose space to celebrate and explore Coventry’s rich history and cultural offering- past, present and future.
The project began in 2003/4 and finished in October 2008
Services offered
In addition to housing a diverse collection of historical documents, the museum offers a wide range of services and facilities including:
There were a range of factors which contributed to the success of the Herbert Museum and Art Gallery. The Museum already possesses a unique and diverse collection of artifacts drawn from the local community from the medieval to the modern.
The new temporary exhibition spaces make it possible for the Herbert to welcome touring exhibitions from national museums. They have exploited this opportunity to develop partnerships with the British Museum, V&A and other nationals, enabling them to bring leading exhibitions to regional audiences. As a result of the redevelopment, the new temporary exhibition spaces has enabled the Museum to accommodate touring exhibitions from national Museums, creating opportunities for partnership working with World renowned museums like the British Museum and Victoria and Albert.
The Herbert Museum was recently awarded the Best Family Friendly Museum in Britain in the Guardian Family Friendly Awards 2010. The Museum has also been long listed for the Art Fund Prize for Museums and Galleries.

The success of the new redevelopment can be viewed in a range of ways. Previously, the average visitor numbers were on average 80,000 a year, however they have risen to 311,000. The Museum and Art Gallery has also been well received by the public, and has received exceptionally positive feedback.
The Trust is focused on maintaining the quality of its existing offer and consolidating its relationship with the dramatically increased new audiences it has developed.
